Ontario Drive Clean Emissions Test: Why and when?

Leading the initiative on climate change, Ontario is one of the only regions with mandatory auto emission testing. The Ontario Drive Clean Emissions Test was first implemented in 1999 to help eliminate hazardous emissions and improve air quality in Ontario.

Keeping the environmental air clean is vital in combating climate change and improving the overall health of Ontario's citizens. Those suffering from allergies, or asthma, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory issues is at risk from emissions caused by automobiles. 

How does Ontario Drive Clean Emissions Test make a difference?

Whether heavy or light, the automobile we drive releases smog-causing pollutants and other toxic contaminants into the environment we breathe in. According to a report by the Ontario Medical  Association, this smog contributes to approximately 9000 premature deaths every year in Ontario alone. 

Since the Ontario Drive Clean Emissions Test was implemented 23 years ago, it has prevented at least 500,000 tonnes of toxic pollutants from making their way into the air we breathe. 

How often do you need an Emission Test in Ontario?

Most vehicles that are 7 years old require a Drive Clean Emissions Test in Ontario at the time of their vehicle registration renewal. How frequently you need emission tests depends on the size of your vehicle. The good news is that your vehicle will receive a registration renewal notice either online or offline to let you know your automobile is due for the emission test. 

There are some exceptions!

Some vehicles are exempt from the Ontario Drive Clean Emissions Test. You will not require an emission test and will not receive a vehicle emission test if you own: 

    • An electric/hybrid electric vehicle

    • A vehicle that is plated “Historic” under the Highway Traffic Act

    • A light-duty commercial farm-plated vehicle

    • A light-duty vehicle with a model year before 1988

    • A kit car

    • A motorcycle

Final thoughts

Air pollution is something that the whole world is striving to minimize. With polluted air, the risk of contracting a disease becomes even more possible with all the contaminants and germs one is inhaling in their lungs. That is why vehicle emission tests in Ontario have become mandatory every other year under the Clean Air Act.
